WHAT IS NAMI?

NAMI, The National Alliance on Mental Illness, is a grassroots advocacy and family support organization devoted to improving the lives of persons affected by mental illness. Founded in 1979, NAMI currently has more than 220,000 members and over 1200 affiliates which can be found in all 50n states as well as internationally. NAMI’s effectiveness has earned it the title as “the nation’s voice on mental illness.”

 
WHAT DOES NAMI OF SARASOTA COUNTY DO?
  • Helps each other by providing support and sharing information, but does not provide social services.
  • Publishes a newsletter that keeps members and citizens informed about NAMI-SC activities, developments in treatments and services in Sarasota County.
  • Maintains a collection of pertinent newspaper and magazine articles, pamphlets, books, videos, and audio tapes.
  • Supports a Family Resource Program created for the purpose of aiding the families of adult mental health consumers in a variety of areas associated with mental health.
  • Provides the “Family to Family Psycho-educational Program” for families and others who qualify.
  • Advocates for change and improvements in our local, state, and national mental health systems of care.
  • Supports and works closely with mental health agencies, providers and our State and National organizations.
